Wat Chalongวัดฉลอง

Phuket's most important temple complex, with a chedi said to hold a bone fragment of the Buddha

  3. Wat Chalong

Wat Chalong is the largest and most visited of Phuket's 29 Buddhist temples, and the island's spiritual heart. The complex centres on three main buildings housing gilded statues of revered abbots Luang Pho Chaem, Luang Pho Chuang, and Luang Pho Gleum — figures credited with healing the sick during the 19th-century Chinese coolies' revolt and revered across the south of Thailand.

The most recent addition is the Grand Pagoda, completed in 2001 and rising 61 metres. It reportedly enshrines a splinter of bone from the Buddha himself. The interior contains a detailed diorama of the Buddha's life across multiple floors, and panoramic views from the upper levels extend over Phuket's forested interior on clear days.

Unlike the beach resort areas of Phuket, Wat Chalong remains a genuinely active place of worship rather than a tourist set-piece. Locals make merit here regularly; the incense smoke is real, the offerings are fresh, and the atmosphere is authentic. It is one of the more grounding cultural experiences available on the island.

Highlights

  • 61-metre Grand Pagoda with possible Buddha relic inside
  • Life-size statues of revered healing abbots Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang
  • Detailed diorama of the Buddha's life across multiple pagoda floors
  • Genuinely active place of worship — smell incense and watch merit-making
  • Surrounded by smaller shrines, fortune-telling facilities, and firecrackers
  • Free entry — one of the few major temples with no admission charge

How to Get There

Wat Chalong is in Chalong sub-district, about 8 km south of Phuket Town. Take a tuk-tuk from Phuket Town for around 200–300 THB, or from Patong for around 400–500 THB. Car hire or motorbike rental is the most flexible option on Phuket.

Visitor Tips

1.

Firecrackers are lit regularly on the temple grounds — do not be startled.

2.

The fortune-telling sticks (siam si) inside the main hall are free to use — shake the canister and take the first stick that falls.

3.

Climb the pagoda floors for increasing views over the surrounding area.

4.

Combine with a visit to Chalong Bay Rum Distillery nearby (5 minutes' drive) for a complete half-afternoon.

5.

No entry fee is charged — a donation box is available and appreciated.
