The Phi Phi Islands are a cluster of six limestone islands in the Andaman Sea between Krabi and Phuket, forming one of Thailand's most iconic seascapes. Koh Phi Phi Don is the only inhabited island, a narrow isthmus of white sand flanked by soaring karst cliffs and two turquoise bays. Koh Phi Phi Leh — uninhabited and protected — holds Maya Bay, the location used in The Beach, and the turquoise Pileh Lagoon. The islands are accessible as a day trip or as a multi-day stay.
Highlights
- Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh — one of the world's most photographed beaches
- Pileh Lagoon — an enclosed emerald cove surrounded by vertical limestone walls
- World-class snorkelling with coral gardens, reef sharks, and sea turtles
- Viewpoint hike on Phi Phi Don with 360-degree panorama over both bays
How to Get There
Ferries depart from Krabi (Passenger Pier), Phuket (Rassada Pier), and Koh Lanta. Journey time: 1.5–2 hours from Krabi, 2 hours from Phuket. Speedboat tours are faster but more expensive. Year-round service runs daily.
Visitor Tips
Maya Bay can become very crowded — arrive on the first boat of the day (typically 8 am) or join a sunset-departure tour for fewer people.
Stay overnight on Phi Phi Don to experience the islands after day-trippers leave — evenings are magical.
Currents around Phi Phi Leh are strong; heed guides' advice and do not snorkel away from the group.
