Maya Bay

The beach made famous by The Beach — now carefully managed with visitor limits

  3. Maya Bay

Maya Bay on Ko Phi Phi Leh gained global fame as the filming location for Danny Boyle's 2000 film 'The Beach'. The near-circular bay, enclosed by soaring limestone cliffs and entered through a narrow gap, has water of implausible turquoise clarity and a crescent of white sand. It is genuinely one of Thailand's most dramatic natural settings.

Following decades of unsustainable visitor numbers — up to 5,000 people per day at its peak — the bay was closed entirely in 2018 for reef rehabilitation. It reopened in 2022 under a strict management regime: a maximum of 300 visitors at any one time, boats prohibited from anchoring inside the bay (visitors wade or swim ashore from a designated mooring), and a daily cap on overall visitor numbers.

The restrictions have worked spectacularly. Coral recovery has been dramatic, fish populations have rebounded, and the experience is vastly better than it was before closure. The day-trip boats still queue outside the bay at peak hours — visiting on a private charter or timing your arrival for late afternoon avoids the worst congestion.

Highlights

  • Filming location for the movie 'The Beach' (2000)
  • Extraordinary turquoise water inside a near-closed limestone bay
  • Recovering coral reef with visible fish and marine life
  • Dramatic cliff walls reaching 100 metres above the water
  • Managed visitor limits mean far less crowding than pre-2018
  • Accessible by day trip from Ao Nang, Krabi Town, or Phuket

How to Get There

Maya Bay is accessible only by boat. Day trips depart from Ao Nang (1 hour), Krabi Town (1.5 hours), and Phuket (2.5 hours). Speedboats are faster and allow more flexibility. There is no accommodation on Ko Phi Phi Leh — overnight stays are not permitted.

Visitor Tips

1.

Book a private speedboat for early morning access — you can often arrive before the day-trip flotilla.

2.

Snorkelling inside the bay is now excellent — bring your own gear or rent from the boat.

3.

The 300-person limit means some boats wait outside during peak hours. Patience required at busy periods.

4.

Combine with Pileh Lagoon and Shark Point on the same trip — better snorkelling than inside Maya Bay.

5.

Day trips from Phuket are cheaper but add 2+ hours of boat travel each way — Ao Nang or Krabi Town trips are shorter.
