Koh Nang Yuan is a private island cluster 1 km northwest of Koh Tao, three small peaks connected by brilliant white sandbars that disappear at high tide — creating a natural hourglass shape that is among the most photographed scenes in the Gulf of Thailand. A short but steep 20-minute hike leads to a viewpoint platform that frames the entire formation against the blue gulf, making it an essential excursion from Koh Tao. The surrounding water is superb for snorkelling.
Highlights
- Iconic three-peak hourglass island formation connected by white sandbars
- One of the most photographed viewpoints in the Gulf of Thailand
- Excellent snorkelling directly off the sandbar and eastern beach
- Pristine coral garden at the base of the eastern cliff
How to Get There
Longtail boats and day-trip speedboats depart from Mae Haad pier on Koh Tao regularly from 8 am. The crossing takes 10–15 minutes. Most dive shops and resorts on Koh Tao offer Nang Yuan as part of a snorkel or dive day trip.
Visitor Tips
No single-use plastic is permitted on the island — the resort enforces this strictly.
The sandbar is widest at low tide; check tide tables before planning your visit.
Book snorkel equipment at the resort dive shop; the coral directly off the sandbar is some of Koh Tao's best.
