Thailand's floating markets are among its most photographed attractions — vendors in wooden boats laden with tropical fruit, cooked food, and crafts, paddling through canals (khlong) between riverside stilted houses. Two markets near Bangkok are the best known and most accessible: Damnoen Saduak (100 km southwest) and Amphawa (80 km southwest), and they offer quite different experiences.
Damnoen Saduak is the more photogenic and the more touristy. By 9 am the narrow canals are filled with longtail boats full of camera-wielding tourists, and many of the vendors know it. The classic floating market photos require an early start (arrive before 8 am) and patience; by late morning the scene is chaotic. Amphawa, 20 km east of Damnoen Saduak, is the more authentic option: a weekend evening market (Friday–Sunday) along a canal where local Thai families come to eat from boats moored along the banks. Fireflies on the trees after dark make Amphawa uniquely atmospheric.
Both markets are day trips from Bangkok. Combined visits are possible but rushed. Choose Damnoen Saduak for the classic visual experience; choose Amphawa for the most authentic atmosphere and the firefly boat tours after 7 pm.

How to Get There
For Damnoen Saduak: take a bus from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal (100 THB, 1.5 hours), then a songthaew to the market. For Amphawa: take a bus from Southern Bus Terminal to Samut Songkhram (80 THB, 1.5 hours), then songthaew. Joining a minivan day tour from Bangkok is the easiest option.
Visitor Tips
For Damnoen Saduak: hire your own longtail boat at the main canal entrance for a private tour of the quieter back canals (400–600 THB for 1 hour).
Amphawa's firefly tour at dusk (after 7 pm on Fri–Sun) is one of the most memorable experiences near Bangkok — book a boat at the canal.
Guided day trips combining both markets are available from Bangkok for around 1,000–1,400 THB including transport.
Avoid weekends at Damnoen Saduak — it is significantly more crowded than weekdays.
Maeklong Railway Market (30 minutes from Damnoen Saduak) is worth adding to the same trip.
