Doi Mae Salong is a hilltop town at 1,300 metres in the mountains of northern Chiang Rai, founded by Nationalist Chinese (KMT) soldiers who retreated here after 1949. The result is a community that feels distinctly unlike anywhere else in Thailand — Chinese shop signs, Yunnanese cuisine, jasmine and oolong tea plantations terracing the slopes, and the constant presence of mountain mist. Sunrise from the hilltop viewpoint reveals a sea of clouds blanketing the valleys below, one of northern Thailand's most rewarding early-morning vistas.
Highlights
- Sea-of-clouds sunrise viewpoint at 1,300 metres elevation
- Yunnanese Chinese culture — tea houses, horse caravans, and unique cuisine
- Tea plantations producing award-winning oolong and green tea
- Proximity to the Golden Triangle and Akha hill-tribe villages
How to Get There
From Chiang Rai city, take a bus or songthaew to Mae Chan (45 minutes), then a connecting songthaew to Doi Mae Salong (another 45 minutes). By motorbike from Chiang Rai, the scenic route via Highway 1234 takes about 1.5 hours.
Visitor Tips
Stay overnight in one of the mountain guesthouses to catch sunrise — the morning mist sea typically dissipates by 9 am.
Buy oolong tea directly from the hillside plantations — prices are far lower than Bangkok shops and quality is traceable.
The mountain road from Mae Chan is steep and winding; a motorbike with good brakes or a hired songthaew is recommended.
