Ancient City (Muang Boran) is the world's largest outdoor museum, a 200-acre park in Samut Prakan south of Bangkok that contains over 100 scaled replicas and reconstructions of Thailand's greatest historical monuments — from Ayutthaya temples and Sukhothai ruins to Lanna pavilions and Rattanakosin palaces. The site is shaped like a map of Thailand, with each monument positioned roughly where it stands geographically. For those who cannot visit every corner of the country, it serves as a remarkable survey of Thai architectural heritage.
Highlights
- Over 100 replicas and partial reconstructions of Thailand's greatest monuments
- Shaped like a map of Thailand — monuments positioned geographically
- Several structures are reconstructions of buildings destroyed in war or natural disaster
- Giant floating market replica and traditional craftspeople at work on site
How to Get There
Take the BTS to Bearing Station, then a songthaew or Grab to Ancient City (about 20 minutes, 8 km south). The park is on Sukhumvit Road in Samut Prakan, easily reachable by taxi from central Bangkok in 45–60 minutes.
Visitor Tips
Rent the included bicycle — the park is too large to walk comfortably in one visit.
A golf cart rental (extra cost) is worthwhile for families with young children or visitors with limited mobility.
Download the park map PDF before you go — the on-site signage can be confusing for non-Thai readers.
