Koh Tao compared
3 head-to-head guides put Koh Tao against the alternatives. Each one covers cost, pace and who it actually suits, rather than declaring a winner.
Best Islands in Thailand
Thailand's islands split between the Gulf of Thailand (east coast: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) and the Andaman Sea (west coast: Phuket, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Kradan). The Andaman islands are more dramatically beautiful with limestone cliffs and clear turquoise water; the Gulf islands are more accessible from Bangkok and have their own charm. Koh Tao is unrivalled for learning to dive. Phi Phi is the most iconic scenery. Koh Lipe is Thailand's most remote paradise beach. Koh Samui is the best-developed large island on the Gulf side.
Koh Tao vs Koh Phangan
These two neighbouring Gulf islands are often visited together, and they complement each other well. Koh Tao is tiny (21 sq km) and built almost entirely around scuba diving — more open water PADI certifications are issued here than anywhere else on earth. The dive sites are exceptional for beginners, prices are the cheapest in Thailand, and the island has a relaxed backpacker charm. Koh Phangan is larger, more varied, and famous for the Full Moon Party and a rapidly growing wellness scene. It has better beaches outside of Sairee, more accommodation options, and draws a mix of party travellers, yoga enthusiasts, and long-stay digital nomads. If you dive or want to learn, start at Koh Tao; if you want more of everything else, Koh Phangan delivers.
Best Budget Destinations in Thailand
Thailand offers some of the world's best value travel at every budget level. Chiang Mai is consistently ranked the world's top city for digital nomads and budget travellers — you can live very well on ฿800–1,200/day. Koh Tao offers the cheapest PADI Open Water diving in the world (around ฿9,000) and a thriving backpacker beach scene. Pai in the mountains is Thailand's most atmospheric ultra-budget destination. Pai, Chiang Rai, and Kanchanaburi all offer excellent experiences for those watching every baht.
