Chiang Mai in August

August is deep in Chiang Mai's green season — the surrounding mountains are lush with vegetation, rice paddies shimmer across the Mae Sa and Samoeng valleys, and the waterfalls north and south of the city are at their most dramatic. Rainfall is substantial but follows a predictable pattern of afternoon and evening downpours rather than all-day grey drizzle. Mornings are often clear. For travellers who want to see northern Thailand at its most verdant and least crowded, August is genuinely rewarding.

Weather in Chiang Mai in August

Warm and humid with significant rainfall. Temperatures average 27–32°C — more comfortable than Bangkok due to the elevation. Rainfall peaks in August at 170–200 mm across the month, typically falling in afternoon downpours of 1–3 hours. The Ping River runs full and fast. Doi Inthanon and the high mountain roads can see mist and occasional brief closures after heavy rain.

Crowds & Prices

Low season for international tourists. The city is noticeably quiet compared to November–February. Guesthouses on Nimman and in the Old City have excellent availability and competitive rates. Temple sites have very few tour groups. The Night Bazaar and Sunday Walking Street operate normally but without the high-season crush.

Best Things to Do in August

  • 1Sticky Waterfall (Bua Tong) — at its most spectacular flow; the unique calcium formations mean you can still climb the falls safely
  • 2Mae Sa Valley rice terrace walks — the paddies are at their most photogenic deep-green colour
  • 3Elephant sanctuary visits — all-weather experience; rain can actually make the mud-play sessions more fun
  • 4Cooking classes — indoor activity unaffected by rain; August is great value for multi-day classes

Travel Tips for August

  • Plan outdoor activities for mornings — the rain window is almost always afternoon onward, leaving 6–11 AM reliably dry.

  • Renting a scooter for the Mae Sa Loop (100 km mountain circuit) is spectacular in August — waterfalls full, rice paddies green.

  • Book elephant sanctuaries at least 2–3 days ahead — they run year-round but good ethical sanctuaries fill quickly even in low season.
